DJ WADE-O – MORE THAN MUSIC IT’S A MINISTRY

Last Saturday I was home cleaning and JP was playing music from his computer. I was taken back because for a second I thought he was listening to Hot 97 (hip hop radio station for those of you not in the Tri-State area ;)). As I walked closer to his office and began to listen to the lyrics, I realized it was a radio station that played nothing but music that ministered and brought glory to God, BUT it was being delivered in such a way I had never heard before. There was such talent and clarity in what was being “preached” through music, I was able to relate on many levels and clean the house with a bounce in my shoulder lol! I immediately asked JP what he was listening to and he told me the “Wade-O Radio Show”.

Ladies and Gentlemen I have the honor of presenting to you a pioneer in music. If you have not heard his name before or heard of his radio show, prepare yourself. If you love Jesus and real music then you are going to LOVE him and what he is doing in the body of Christ. If you don’t know Jesus and like music, you are going to LOVE him and meet Jesus through music! Take a look at the awesome interview that DJ Wade-O granted to W.W.J.S.!!

WHO IS DJ WADE-O AND WHAT IS THE STORY BEHIND YOUR “DJ NAME”?

Interesting question.  I’ve often wondered this myself.  LOL! I’m saved by God’s grace, I am a husband, a father, a son, a DJ and huge Lakers fan! (Sorry Wade-O :()  I love reading and technology.  Basically I’m a Jesus nerd. 🙂
I grew up in Columbus, Ohio and graduated from Howard University in 2002.  I worked in Corporate America for a couple of years before doing what I do now.
My DJ Name is actually short for Wade (my government name) from Ohio. During my freshman year at Howard University, some of my friends began calling me that.

WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO DO A RADIO BROADCAST FOR CHRIST INSTEAD OF “SECULAR” MUSIC?
Although I grew up going to church in Columbus, Ohio, for the first 22 years of my life I didn’t have a true personal relationship with Jesus Christ.  I knew who Jesus was, but I was not committed to serving Him.  During my college years at Howard University and then going by the name DJ Oddysey, I hosted the #1 radio show on Howard’s student run radio station WHBC 830 AM.  As such, I had the opportunity to share the stage or DJ events with and for the likes of Nas, Busta Rhymes, Alicia Keys, DJ Clue, Fabolous, DMX, Biz Markie, Mos Def, Baby Sham, Ashanti and Mobb Deep.

Despite that “worldly success,” I was spiritually bankrupt.  I was never truly at peace.  I knew I needed to make a change in my life, but I was scared.  I didn’t want to miss out on all of the fun.  I thought that when I finally grew up, then I would get serious about serving the Lord.
In 2002, my life changed. A good friend gave me a book written by former hip-hop superstar Ma$e entitled Revelations.  Through Ma$e’s (now Pastor Mason Betha) testimony, I was re-introduced to Jesus Christ.   I saw someone who had everything I was chasing: money, power and respect, yet gave it all up to serve the Lord.  At that moment, I knew the Lord was calling me.  This time, I accepted the Lord’s call and my life has not been the same ever since. Around 2004 and 2005, I really started to get into Christian Hip Hop. Shortly thereafter, my youth pastor and I began planning a new years eve event and we needed a DJ.  Even though I hadn’t DJ’d since I got saved in 2002, my youth pastor encouraged me to DJ that event.  Concurrently, the Lord began giving me the vision for the Wade-O Radio Show and so I just stepped out on faith into the new world of podcasting.  Even though I’m still growing up, I’ve dedicated my life to telling others about Jesus Christ.

WHAT FIRST SPARKED YOUR INTEREST TO BECOME A DJ?

I believe that music is one of those rare art forms that can bring people of all races, nationalities and economic backgrounds together. In its purest form, music can inspire, encourage and evoke an emotional response that can resonate with the listener for hours and even days on end. Ministry takes that a step further. Ministry equips others with the skills to become all that God has destined for them to become.

ARE YOU MARRIED? HAVE A FAMILY? IF SO, HOW DO YOU BALANCE FAMILY AND A BUSY SCHEDULE?

Happily Married with 2 kids! My wife Belinda tells me when I’m not doing what I need to do. Lol! That’s the main check. In all seriousness though, I’m still learning. What I do is not a traditional 9 to 5, I had to train myself to carve out time outside of the traditional Saturday and Sunday to spend time with them.  The only way to balance it, is to make it a priority.

ALTHOUGH YOU HAVE HAD MANY, NAME 3 OF YOUR FAVORITE ARTIST/GUESTS AND WHY?

The Only way I’ll answer this is if you promise to not show this to the other 800 artist I don’t list. Lol 🙂
Hip Hop:
Sho Baraka
 theBreax
Da T.R.U.T.H.
Trip Lee (I know that’s 4. sorry!)
R&P (Rhythm and Praise :)):
Canton Jones
Chris Lee Cobbins
Cam

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT WHAT YOU DO?

Being able to help people grow. Thats really what it boils down too…growth. Putting people on to new music, dance and having a good time is a great thing.  However, at the end of the day, if I didn’t help you see Christ more clearly, I have failed. So when people tell me a song or interview helped them thru a tough time or see God for who He truly is, that’s encouraging.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SCRIPTURE AND WHY?

Can I substitute this for a favorite book?  Lol! I love Acts. It reminds me of the Christian Hip Hop music scene in that it’s very organic, very revolutionary and very Christ Centered in it’s approach.  But if I must choose 1, let’s go for Philippians 4:13. Its my go to when someone tells me I can’t do something.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE WHO IS INTERESTED IN BECOMING A DJ?

Practice, Pray and Play.  Practice the art form of DJing. Pray for guidance and play music that points people to Jesus.

*************************************************************************

WHAT IS YOUR ULTIMATE GOAL FOR THE “WADE-O RADIO SHOW”?

I’d love to be syndicated world wide, if that’s God’s Will. But at the core, I just want to be where God wants us to be.

Here’s just a sample of what you would hear on the  Wade-O Radio Show:
