DON’T BOND WITH BONDAGE

On Wednesday, I received this email from one of my readers asking for help:

Hello! I have a personal question to ask you. I am a Christian but from time to time I find my self struggling with lust. I want to get away so badly but for some stupid reason, I find my self back. It’s to the point that I hate myself. So my question… how do I get away & be free? I read the Bible and know what it says but I just dont know why I do what I do. BTW I like your blog…

I was immediately taken back by the honesty and transparency and the genuine need to want to break free. I was reminded that we all as Christians have the potential to suffer with some form of bondage if we are not careful and guarded. We are all tempted and fall short to the glory of God at some point during the day let alone some point in our life. This is in no way to expose the reader but to shine light on an issue that many of us have experienced at one time or another and offer a solution to breaking free. I am no counselor and can only offer what the Holy Spirit guides me in saying; and He will always offer the right answer. I take this very seriously and I pray you will as well. After asking permission, the reader has graciously allowed me to share my response in hopes that someone else who finds themselves in any form of bondage will find the courage to run into the arms of the One who can break the chains and set us all free.

This is a longer than normal blog entry for W.W.J.S. but I totally don’t think you will mind 🙂

First let us define what lust is :

Lust is an emotional force that is directly associated with the thinking or fantasizing about one’s desire, usual( but not always) in a sexual way.

There are different forms of lust and examples throughout the Bible-there are just a few listed below:

Once you realize just how LARGE God is you will begin to understand just how insignificant your battle with lust is. Reading God’s Word is great, but we MUST internalize it. It is essential to our survival or we will find ourselves in a position where we will believe things that are not true or falling victim to the tactics of the enemy. God is much bigger than any lust/temptation that you are experiencing. He is ALL powerful and is with you even when you think He isn’t. He knows exactly what you are going through and knew you would have this struggle, but He is waiting patiently for you to love Him more than whatever it is you are lusting over. See once you love God more than anything, once you put Him before everything it becomes difficult to be tempted by the devil with temporary happiness and fulfillment which can not compare to what God has in store for you. God loves you and NEVER does anything that would lead to bondage. This is nothing but the enemy.

Lust never just happens. Before you lust over anything you were exposed to it and then temptation follows. But 1 Corinthians 10:13 says:

1 Corinthians 10:13 (New International Version, ©2011)

13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

God will ALWAYS provide a way out for you but if we are not in tune with Him we could very easily miss our opportunity to escape. This is where not just reading His Word comes in but being shaped by His Word is so important, surrounding ourselves with like-minded, praying friends and family, getting involved in activities where we are not surrounded solely by what it is you lust after. If you lust for money, I don’t suggest you work at a bank. If it is drugs or alcohol you find yourself struggling with, I do not suggest hitting the club every weekend. If it is a sexual lust that you struggle with, you MUST take the necessary steps to ensure you do not find yourself in a compromising position. You are fighting your flesh and must build up your spirit; simply put this battle is not your’s to fight it is the Lord’s. You can not do this on your own. It is easier to hear from God when we are focused solely on Him and we rid ourselves of other distractions; which you must realize the distractions are the enemy.

The enemy or “lil d” as I call him has a job to “steal and kill and destroy” (John 10:10) It is just that simple. Steal your dreams and aspirations, kill you spiritually, emotionally and physically and destroy any chances of fulfilling what you have been sent to earth to complete. He never has your best interest in mind and will relentlessly do whatever it takes to put you on a path that moves you outside of God’s will. BUT Jesus said: ” I (Jesus) came so they (us) can have real and eternal life, more and better life than they (us) ever dreamed of. (John 10:10). God never wants you to hate yourself! What He desires from you is to repent, ask for forgiveness, forgive yourself and move toward living the life Jesus gave His life for us to have! When Jesus died on the cross He gained the victory over lil d, which included sin and death and we share and inherit that victory! Paul said that Jesus “was delivered up because of our offenses, and was raised because of our justification… For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life” (Rom. 4:25, 5:10). Jesus reminds us, “I have told you this so that through me you may have peace. In the world you will have trouble, but be courageous-I have overcome the world!” (John 16:33)

I think Kirk Franklin’s song “A God Like You” says it best, ” You became just like me to unlock and set free this prisoner that was deeply wounded and redeemed. The me I could not see.” Of course I posted the song and the lyrics for you!

Everybody wanna be like you they
Want power and praise like you but
See there is no god like our God
There’s no one like you
Who gave their life like you and
Who paid our price like you see
There’s only one god that’s our God
There’s no one like you.

Who can touch like you
Or heal us like you do?
We stumble and we stray
still you always get us through
Who makes all things new
And comes to our rescue?
Death, hell, and the grave
They could not conquer

You became just like me
To unlock and set free
This prisoner that was deeply wounded and redeemed
The me I could not see

Everybody wanna be like you they
Want power and praise like you but
See there is no god like our God
There’s no one like you
Who gave their life like you and
Who paid our price like you see
There’s only one god that’s our God
There’s no one like you.

Some may worship things
But what joy do they bring
They try and hide the stains
But can they set us free
See where would we be
Without Calvary
A king upon a tree
So the whole world can see

You became just like me
To unlock and set free
This prisoner that was deeply wounded and redeemed
The me I could not see

Everybody wanna be like you they
Want power and praise like you but
See there is no god like our God
There’s no one like
Who gave their life like you and
Who paid our price like you see
There’s only one god that’s our God
There’s no one like you.

Healer, father, savior
Counselor, friend, provider
Was is and forever
That’s why I just wanna be where you are
I’ll travel life with you no matter how far
[2x]

Hey, hey, hey
[4]

Became just like me
To unlock and set free
This prisoner that was deeply wounded and redeemed
The me I could not see

Everybody wanna be like you they
Want power and praise like you but
See there is no god like our God
There’s no one like you
Who gave their life like you and
Who paid our price like you see
There’s only one god that’s our God
There’s no one like you.

There’s no one like you, there’s no one like you, there’s no one like you, there’s no god like our God
There’s no one like you. [8x]

The enemy knows that as long as you are hating yourself and giving into what you lust you will never see the “real you” but if you begin to internalize and meditate on just who God is and His Word you will come to know that you have the Holy Spirit in you which empowers you to overcome any lust that you struggle with. This is how you will break free Psalm 55:22:

Psalm 55:22 (The Message)

22-23 Pile your troubles on God’s shoulders—
he’ll carry your load, he’ll help you out.
He’ll never let good people
topple into ruin.

There is NOTHING too hard for God and you have to know this. If you read nothing else I have written NOTHING IS TOO HARD FOR GOD! He loves you so much and wants you to live your best life but you have to trust Him and follow Him completely. Before you know it, God will walk you right out of your situation and you will be sharing your test and trial as a testimony. God Bless You! I believe God for your complete deliverance so that you may come to know Him and the true life He has called you to live! Don’t bond with bondage! Allow God to break the chain and set you free!
