So I’ve always had a passion for inspiring women and girls. I find joy in motivating and inspiring and in turn I become motivated and inspired. So I decided to start an all women’s support group entitled W.E.L.L–Women Excelling Loving Learning. I am so excited about where God is taking this group. To expand the group, I decided to start a group on Facebook and we are up to 173 members in less than 1 month and we’re growing strong! We hosted our first vision board party May 14th and it was awesome! What’s a vision/prayer board you ask? A vision board is a tool used to help clarify, concentrate and maintain focus on a specific life goal. Literally, a vision board is any sort of board on which you display images that represent whatever you want to be, do or have in your life. What is the point? Simply put, we sometimes tend to be a very busy and constantly bombarded by distractions. Making use of vision boards serves several purposes, some of which include helping you to:
- Identify your vision and give it clarity.
- Reinforce your daily affirmations.
- Keep your attention on your intentions
So I wanted to share with you the pictures from our first event! Now I know your wondering, “Peaches, why the delay with the pictures?” Blame her:
Take a look at the pics below!
So…What’s your vision?!
EXCEL : LOVE : EXPLORE
Aren’t you excited!!!? LOL! Well I am 🙂
So while I was gone…I did what I always do and that’s OBSERVE! I am constantly watching, thinking and pondering–I wonder what people are thinking when they do what they do, or go where they go…you know, normal stuff lol! Anyway, while I was people watching, I noticed there were some people laughing, some appeared angry, others were lost in their own thoughts, some were reading, while others were singing to their favorite tune on the radio.
I know….your wondering, “Jennifer, where are you going with this besides the fact that you’ve proven your a snooper ;)” My point is that while your home mulling over your lost job, angry at your spouse or family member, crying over the loser that just broke up with you 10 minutes ago, thinking about your next move in life, the world is moving and it’s not stopping to wait for you. So how are you spending each of the 1,440 minutes that you are given each day? ( By the way thanks for spending 5 of them with me! ;))
Somewhere in the world right now someone is starting the business that you have been thinking about, someone is finally taking the steps to get their degree, someone is nurturing their passion, people are networking, people are laughing at corny jokes, people are loving, people are building legacies for future generations; bottom line…the world is moving ahead with or without you, so why not move forward; actually… propel forward? What would you have to lose? You’ve wasted time thinking about your future..its time for you to start putting your thoughts into action.
Let’s all make a commitment as we continue to excel in 2011 to pursue our goals. How about a small homework assignment? Don’t worry it won’t be hard! This assignment is great for individuals, couples, families, chilrens (lol children if you didn’t get it :))… I encourage you to partner with your significant other/families and do this project together. It’s important to have individual goals as well as a goal for your family unit to strive for.
Take out a sheet of paper, grab your laptop or iPad–list 2 goals that you want to achieve before the end of this year. If you don’t have 2 or if you have more than 2 that’s okay…list them no matter what they are. Maybe you want a car, save a certain amount of money, move to your own place/a new state, lose weight, speak another language, travel somewhere, be nicer, stop cursing lol whatever it is…list your goals.
Now, list 3 goals you want to achieve by June 2013. These will be your long term goals…goals that may take a little longer to achieve but can still be done.
That wasn’t too hard right?! Now please don’t get it twisted…once you write your goals down, make it a point to PRAY over them. Your not going to accomplish anything with greatness without help from God. Ask Him to help you. God only wants the best for you, so if your goals line up with His, his plan of action is much better than yours…trust me!
Let these goals be with you…tape them on your bathroom/bedroom mirror, make them your phone or laptop’s wallpaper, keep the list in your purse or wallet so that it’s easy to keep your eyes on the prize.
Don’t let the world pass you by. You have so much greatness inside of you, stir it up and let the world catch up with you!
Start small with your goals and soon you’ll be crossing things off your list! If you feel like sharing your goals…email them to firstname.lastname@example.org and you can be featured in my next entry! Your courage and determination to chase down your dream can motivate someone else to pursue what they only envisioned. It will be great to see what we are all striving to accomplish by the end of this year!
I love you all dearly! Here’s to getting up, getting motivated and truly living up to our potential!!

29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.
When you speak do people feel better about themselves after spending time with you or do they feel worse than they did when they came to you? Are your expectations so high that you have a habit of focusing on people’s shortcomings rather than their assets? Do you have a way of motivating strangers and tearing down ones that are closest to you due to your high expectations for family and friends? Are you so insecure that you only feel good about your self when you are denigrating others?
The word “belittle” implies that something or someone is unimportant or little. It is used in order to disparage a person. To cast them in a negative light, with the intent of making them seem less impressive than they actually appear or feel. Words are just like a hammer; they can either tear down or help build up. Now please keep in mind that belittling isn’t a full fledged cut-down. It is taking a person down a few pegs, often to the belittler’s assumed level; think of it as evening out the playing field.
Do we belittle people about the same things we don’t like about ourselves? It always seems to be that way; but it makes me wonder, if people will ever realize that the grass is NEVER greener on the other side. In fact, if we ever want our grass to be greener…we should just water it.
We have to also realize that some people go to great lengths to make sure their lives appear successful, happy and secure. However most of the time, it is an illusion. They are those that are really empty but appear filled with joy and all things great. They are the ones lonely in crowds of people. In my 27 years I have not met anyone with a perfect life, and I venture to say that we never will. There is always someone better, stronger, cuter, smarter…but this is why I believe we should never compare ourselves to others, because sometimes what we compare ourselves to isn’t even real.
More over, people know when a person belittles another out of jealousy. What makes it worse is, it becomes apparent that they aren’t belittling the other person. They are actually belittling themselves.
Make it a habit to build up your family and friends. Offer an encouraging, sincere word to those around you. Tell you wife how much she means to you, tell your husband how much you appreciate his sense of responsibility, applaud your children for the excellent job they do in school and for staying away from drugs and alcohol, thank your friend for always keeping your secrets and being loyal, just to name a few! Resist the temptation to constantly want to “fix” something about them. Accept them for who they are and remember…you can never change a person, but you can control what changes you make regarding you!
Ask God to help you regarding your speech. Declare that no unwholesome talk will come out of your mouth, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs (not what YOU think they need) and also that whatever words you share benefits those who listen.
EXCEL in all that you do LOVE harder than you normally would EXPLORE new things!
We always look at others to compare ourselves to where we think we should be. Admit it…we’ve all done it before. As Christians, we wonder why when we do everything the right way we still seem to be attacked the hardest. Yet sometimes when we look around us, it seems like were surrounded by people who have no regard for others, are strictly out for self and they don’t care who’s toes they have to step on to get where they want to be. We can’t help but wonder if were doing something wrong.
Great news!!!! YOU ARE RIGHT WHERE YOU NEED TO BE!!! Be reminded that the devil has those people’s hearts right where he wants them. There is nothing to test. Nothing to attack. They are being disobedient to God’s will and what He wants for us- lil’ d is satisfied -that’s enough for him. For those of us who desire a closer relationship with God and long to please Him- we are prime targets for the devil. Jesus said it himself :
John 16:33 (New International Version, ©2011)
33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
So take your test and trials as a compliment. God believes your strong enough to pass the test and the devil recognizes how much of a threat you are once you realize your strength.
You must realize that what God has for you is strictly yours! Stop looking around at others and start giving them something to look at! The plans God has for you has YOUR name on it and even the date it’s gonna manifest! He knew all that you would endure before you were even born. Your job is to have faith in Him and have the courage to step out on faith in what He’s called u to be. That does not include being involved in what everyone else is doing or keeping tabs on what “blessings” they appear to be receiving. That has nothing to do with your walk with God. Don’t fall victim to the traps the devil sets before you; Life is a test and God has already provided the answers in the Bible; He wants you to do so well that He has allowed the test to be open book! There’s no way you can fail! You’ve already got the victory!!
EXCEL : LOVE : EXPLORE
I’m a native of San Diego, CA!…you know, the place that’s 70+ degrees year around (smile)! I lived in Oceanside, CA for about 22 years, until my job relocated me to NJ…you know, the place with 32 inches of snow! I think it was 4 degrees here this morning! But it’s all good, I met you, my beautiful wife here. I love God with all my heart; I’m a PK (Preacher’s Kid). And in my free time I am probably knee-deep in cupcakes!!
WHAT IGNITED THE SPARK TO START YOUR OWN BUSINESS?
I started designing flyers and cd covers for my good friends and mentors, Eddie Baltrip, and my Godfather, Clyde Williams, back in 2003 and doing little projects for the family, like Christmas cards. It’s pretty funny because the other day I found an old Christmas card I designed for our family back in 2003, and on the back I put a little JP Designs Art logo and at the bottom the words read “An Establishing Design Firm”. It almost brought me to tears, because I realize this company has really been 8 years in the making; and it may have been delayed, but I never gave up on it.
HOW DID JP DESIGNS ART FINALLY COME TO BE?
I owe all the credit to God. It wasn’t my idea, I was in school for Psychology. I was a student working as a full-time retail manager for a major retail brand. The company had moved me to South San Diego to open a new store, but business was sooooo slow in that store. In my down time I created a music video of the store on a Mac Laptop my mom and dad bought for me, I guess they saw something I hadn’t. Anyways, the music video of the store turned out so great that I decided to package it in a nice DVD case, designed a cover and everything! I figured, why not send it to the president of the company as a gift…what did I have to lose, right? Well, sure enough a few weeks later I received a message from the president of the retail company saying, “JP, I received your music video and I had a 2 hour presentation to make at our corporate budget meeting. I had 10 minutes to fill, and your video was a perfect fit! We need you in the corporate office”. So God obviously had a plan for my life bigger than I imagined, because he took a boy from Oceanside, with no college degree, no graphic design experience and made him the head graphic designer for a major retail brand. The brand sent me to graphic design classes and I learned a ton about the graphic design field. I spent 7 years with them, and in those last 2 years I knew my God-given assignment there was coming to an end and God had something even greater planned for me. I began praying for a way of escape, so that I could really establish JP Designs Art and use the gift God had given me and cultivated to help build His Kingdom here on earth. Sure enough, the Lord made it happen effortlessly in December 2010. And let me tell you, I’ve hit the ground running!!!
WHAT IS THE NAME OF YOUR COMPANY AND WHAT DO YOU SPECIALIZE IN?
JP Designs Art is a full service creative, innovative and professional marketing company committed to bringing your ideas to life. Our capabilities include, but are not limited to: Logos, Business Cards, Postcards, Flyers, Apparel Printing, Invitations and Personalized Greeting Cards, Announcements, CD/DVD Covers, Letterheads, and Company Consultations.
WHAT SETS YOUR BUSINESS APART FROM OTHER COMPANIES LIKE YOURS?
HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS?
I’ll tell you how God does. Proverbs 13:22 says “A good man leaves an inheritance for his children’s children”. I believe I’ll feel like I’m successful when I can say that. I’ve been so blessed to travel, eat at nice places, and experience the finer things in life. I do what I LOVE for a living, have a great wife, and family I love….but it doesn’t mean much if I haven’t left anything for my children and their children. My father, the late Rev. Robert L. Moore, Sr., was successful at doing just that and he is my role model as I strive to do the same.
WHO INSPIRES YOU?
My parents, Robert & Blendale Moore, are my greatest inspiration. They have invested endless days, and sleepless nights and millions of dollars into their children. Looking back at the sacrifices and hard work they made inspires me to carry on the great legacy they have built. I had an opportunity to share my business plan with my dad before he passed, and he blessed it; that means the world to me. I’m also inspired by my Godfather, Clyde Williams. I’ve seen this man go from pit, to palace, to pit, to palace and everywhere in-between, but never one day could you tell if he was in the pit or the palace because he always looked like he was on top of the world. The way his faith never wavered, and how I watched God sustain him inspires me, and reminds me that when you are obedient to God’s Word, He will bless everything your hand touches to prosper. And last but certainly not least, you…my wife inspires me. Taking this leap of faith could have been a difficult one, but having my best friend and lover by my side, reassuring me that this was the will of God for our lives made it effortless. Having you cheering me on from project to project is inspiration that money cannot by. I love you. (Awww…Love You too schnookums!!)
WHAT SACRIFICES HAVE YOU MADE TO GET TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?
SLEEP!! Lot’s of sleep! When I was working for the retail brand I would work 9-5, then come home and work from 8pm-4am and all through the weekend. I barely got any sleep! But it was a sacrifice well worth seeing the progress the company made.
HOW DO YOU MANAGE A SOCIAL LIFE AND BEING A BUSINESS OWNER?
People say, “Oh it must be great having your own business. You make your own hours. You come and go as you please!”. Well, that may be the case one day, but right now I’m in the early “crunch time” phase of establishing the business. I’m the President, Creative Director, Office Manager, Project Coordinator, Administrative Assistant, Account Manager, Purchasing Manager, Legal Team, and Custodian! It’s definitely more than a full-time gig, but I love it and it makes me appreciate those checks all the more when I go to the bank! LOL! But balancing the social life is difficult, because you want to enjoy the downtime, but the Administrative Assistant in me is thinking “you have a meeting tomorrow at 2pm, did you send the confirmation email?”. Hahaha! It’s something I live and breathe. The balance definitely needs some work, but thank God He’s given us grace to run the race, and live for the weekends that we can unwind and relax a little bit!
EXCLUDING YOUR BUSINESS =) WHAT COMPANY OR OTHER BUSINESS’ DO YOU ADMIRE?
I really admire OPRAH- talk about starting from scratch and becoming one of the most recognized names in the world; now she has her own network that doesn’t even appear to be a “start-up” network!!!? WOW!
I also admire my friend and big-bro, Marcell Pickens. He and his wife Evvett have a photography company called, EVVETT MARCELL PHOTOGRAPHY, and I admire them for the excellence that pours out of every project they do! Their work is phenomenal and it definitely sets a new standard.
And last but not least SWEET REVENGE!!! Owner Marlo Scott has a similar story of working in the corporate world for “the man”, and she has soared like an eagle above the clouds when she opened her cupcake and beer bar, becoming the face of Chase Ink and being featured on several daytime television shows. SWEET REVENGE branding is so catchy and consistent, and admire Marlo for being the fun, snazzy, down-to-earth owner that really makes you feel like it’s a brand you can trust!
WHAT ARE 7 OF YOUR FAVORITE PROJECTS?
1. The church fan wedding programs!!!
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF AND YOUR BUSINESS IN 5 YEARS? 10 YEARS?
5 years, 10 years, truly only the Lord knows! He has a habit of exceeding my expectations. So I’ll say I would love to have an office and staff based out of Santa Monica, CA and another office in Downtown NYC….and maybe one in Chicago as well! Why not, right!?
WHAT ARE 3 PIECES OF ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE SOMEONE WANTING TO START THEIR OWN BUSINESS?
1. Keep your dreams alive.
2. Understand to achieve anything requires faith and belief in yourself, vision, hard work, determination, and dedication.
3. Remember all things are possible for those who believe.

EXCEL: LOVE: EXPLORE
Cara Walker has been a long time friend of mine and I love her to pieces!! She is an intelligent, charismatic, fashionista who has plenty to say! As we continue to “Excel in 2011”, check out my interview with Cara as she takes a moment out of her busy schedule to talk a little bit about who she is, where she’s going and what looks we have to look forward to for the upcoming spring season!!
TELL THE PEOPLE WHO YOU ARE!!
My name is Cara Walker and I’m a young lady from Irvington, NJ. I attended Montclair State University and graduated with a BS in Marketing & Management. ( Yes, I was a Red Hawk lol!) I currently work in New York, which i hope to make my official home soon. I love music, the color pink and black nail polish!
HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN INTERESTED IN FASHION? WHY?
Yes, I have always been interested in fashion and having fun with clothes. When I was a young girl I would play “dress-up”. You could always find me rummaging through my mom’s clothes and make-up to create outfits to model around the house! There are hundreds of pictures of me in all types of looks that I put together, even at a young age.
Growing up, like most adolescents I had my awkward stages where nothing fit me right or I wasnt able to buy the clothes that I ideally wanted to wear, so as soon as I was able to make my own money I began buying my own clothes and developing my own personal style. This made way for me to transcend from that awkward little girl into the person I would be as an adult.
SO TELL US, WHAT IS THE C-LIST?
The C-List is a blog that I created geared toward everyday people like myself who are making moves in all areas to excel and progress in life. Everyone is familiar with “The A-List”, mainstream celebs who “personify” success in society; so I wanted to create The C-List, which would be a community of people who are on the climb to becoming that “A-List” person but for now is a star in their own lane.
The C-List shares information with people who want to indulge in ideas of fashion, events and a diverse range of other interesting topics. It is a place that I created to market a community of people who believe there’s more to life beyond your own impression of it. Some people live life, but I love life and I try to embody that in every post that I put on The C-List. Although it’s still a baby, I am looking forward to expanding The C-List in other avenues of my career; so be on the lookout for what it has to offer!
HOW DID THE C-LIST COME ABOUT? WHAT SPARKED IT?
The C-List came about one day while I was sitting at home and decided to start a blog just for kicks. Working in the area of marketing and advertising for Complex Magazine in NY, I see a lot of funky and fun stuff so I thought it would be cool to be able to share these experiences with others. There was a time when I had so much on my mind, so many ideas, I wondered if I was the only person who felt this way. So I began to think, if I share my experiences and thoughts with other people, maybe I could connect with them, inspire or motivate them in different areas of their lives.
NAME 5 THINGS YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT.

WHAT ADVICE OR MOTTO DO YOU LIVE BY?
One piece of advice that I love comes from a quote that I read a long time ago.
“Love life, engage in it, give it all you’ve got. Love it with a passion because life truly does give back, many times over, what you put into it.”
10 YEARS FROM NOW YOU SEE YOURSELF…
Living and loving life even more than now! I definitely see myself progressing where I work now in the magazine industry and establishing my own business ventures in fashion; maybe open a boutique or two…the possibilities are endless! I appreciate everything that I’ve been blessed with, so I won’t be picky lol! I know God has something great in store for me!
LET’S TALK FASHION! WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BEST TRENDS YOU SEE FOR SPRING 2011?
I am seeing a lot of biker inspired clothing. This look is fusing with the military look, that has been around for a while now, for this upcoming spring.
There is also a trend in 70s glamour with two main aesthetics: 70’s bohemian and 70’s sophisticated glamour.
SO TELL US WHAT ARE THE 5 MUST HAVES FOR MEN AND WOMEN FOR SPRING 2011…
THE 5 MUST HAVES FOR WOMEN:
1. CHUNKY BANGLES: Accessories create a wonderful story for your outfit. Animal print bangles are really coming around this season, these will add a little flair to any outfit!
2. LONG, BOLD, FLORAL PRINTED DRESSES: I don’t really like small flowers on clothing but it seems as though this coming season there are a lot of designers using big floral patterns on their designs.
3. BELTED PURSE: This is 2011’s elegant take on the fanny pack.
4. CAT-EYED SHAPED SUNGLASSES: These sunglasses, which are vintage inspired look, is a shape that screams glamour!!
5. TANGERINE LIPS AND SOFT ROSEY CHEEKS: These looks (not done together lol) are popping up on everyone’s runway!
5 MUST HAVES FOR MEN
1. BIKER BOOTS
2. A BLAZER
3. NEUTRAL KHAKI COLORED JACKET

TODAY AND EVERYDAY EXCEL IN ALL YOU DO! LOVE HARDER THAN YOU NORMALLY WOULD! EXPLORE NEW THINGS!
To kick off our “Excel’n in ’11” theme, I am honored and proud to feature my interview with Season 4 American Idol finalist, ANWAR ROBINSON!! With just 4 days left before his much-anticipated album “EVERYTHING” is due to drop, Anwar shares everything from advice, to who inspires him, to his future endeavors and everything in between! Take a look at what Anwar had to say!
WHO IS ANWAR ROBINSON? WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I was born in East Orange, NJ and then when I was 6 months old we moved to my childhood home in the Vailsburg section of Newark,NJ.
WHEN DID YOU START SINGING?
I didn’t speak for the first 4 years of my life. It was singing that was the first sounds that I made. I was 4 when my mother bought me a Casio keyboard and it was learning how to play that instrument that caused me to be able to sing in tune. When I got to Lincoln Elementary School, (which is still on Richelieu Terrace) 😉 my music teacher, Sandra Talmadge, discovered I had the gift of voice.
WHO ELSE IN YOUR FAMILY SINGS?
I have an aunt who sounds a lot like Faith Evans; she is the only one. Although…my brother and I did sing together a few years ago. It was a worship tune in the car on the way home from an incredible church service! (He’s a former college basketball player who would probably go nuts if he found out I told anyone…oh, well! LOL!)
TELL US WHAT YOUR LIFE WAS LIKE “BEFORE IDOL” AND WHAT IT TOOK FOR YOU TO GET WHERE YOU ARE TODAY.
I have a strong work-ethic that i developed while I was in high school. I’ve always held at least 2 jobs simultaneously and have always been referred to as one of the Hedley’s from Fox’s “In Living Color” (HEY MON!!!) I had accepted a new teaching job in West Orange, NJ as a middle school vocal music teacher which I had done for two years prior in Elizabeth, NJ. I also played piano/keys for churches and was in a Cover Band called
The Perfect Combination (which really lived up to its name lol!) I enjoyed making music and was always inspired to sing, teach and play the piano/keyboard.
One of my life’s biggest challenges was going through the “American Idol” television show, placing top 10, touring with the Idol Band and then having to navigate my own instantaneous, newly found yet fastly fading fame. It took a lot of courage to admit that I could not do it alone and that my gifts were going to be the only thing that made room for me. I am so glad that I’ve found my sound as an artist and more importantly, my message of unconditional love. God had to show me that I needed to trust people again and that I needed to depend on my family and friends as they had always depended on me.
Last, but certainly not least …God sent a group of people to me; my team SAVvy MARKeting Entertainment Group, LLC. They manage, counsel, and give me guidance whenever I need it. The support and honesty that they have given me has been unparalleled ; they are truly my family.
WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO BE ON AMERICAN IDOL? DO YOU FEEL IT FUELED YOUR CAREER AT ALL?
Being on “American Idol” was a roller coaster ride that started out as a dare from one of my three best friends. Thank God that he invited me to come with him to Washington, DC! “American Idol” definitely made me well-known and gave my name recognition that I would otherwise not have, in addition to the performance opportunities and role in musical theatre that it helped open up. As an independent artist, I now have more “legs” to run on with my 2011 album entitled “EVERYTHING”.
IF YOU WEREN’T SINGING, WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING?
I wanted to be a writer! I started writing in a journal when I was 18 and at the age of 31 I still write in the same journal! I would have went to college for English and perhaps broadcast journalism. Somehow, I would have probably still been a teacher, but music filled the space of “What am I going to do for the rest of my life?”
WHAT KIND OF MUSIC DO YOU LISTEN TO?
In addition to the Gospel and R&B that I grew up on, I love Jazz; especially Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughn. I also like Easy Rock (ie. Chicago, Doobie Brothers) and Blue-eyed Soul. Due to the influence of my Idol Cohort, Carrie Underwood (season 4 winner) Country music has become a like of mine as well.
WHO ARE YOUR MUSICAL INSPIRATIONS?
My first love is Gospel music, so I listen to many artist from that genre. Karen-Clark Sheard happens to be my favorite singer for musical and personal reasons. Her “Finally Karen” album helped me through some tough times during my freshman year of college. On the R&B side, I love Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway, Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke, Earth, Wind & Fire, Luther Vandross, Michael Jackson (especially his work in the 70s/80s….WHAT A SINGER!), R. Kelly and Joe to name a few. =-)
I also listen to a lot of female singers such as Aretha, Chaka, Patti, Whitney, Mariah, Shanice, Brandy, Beyoncé, Faith Evans, Lalah Hathaway, Sy Smith, Fantasia, Jennifer Hudson and Jazmine Sullivan. I love SOUL-STIRRING VOICES…or as most would say, REAL SANGERS!
IF YOU COULD DABBLE IN ANOTHER GENRE OF MUSIC, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
I’ve been experimenting with Pop music. Since Pop(ular) music flavors change with the times, I’ll always be open to doing new styles in order to keep my chops up and to stay relevant within the industry.
WHERE WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO PERFORM?
I have performed many times on the Prudential Hall Stage of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, NJ, but I also look forward to returning to sing in my hometown doing my own music. As an independent solo artist, I am looking toward the Prudential Center, also in Newark, NJ. It’s a big feat, but I believe God can do anything and I am going to continue to strive and reach these goals.
NAME A MOMENT WHEN YOU WANTED TO GIVE UP. WHAT KEPT YOU FROM DOING SO?
2006. It was a year after “Idol” and I felt like EVERYTHING I tried to do would not work. My perspective was a bit warped; I didn’t realize how many more dues were to be paid in order to realize my dream of being an artist. 2009-after having 2 successful runs in Broadway Shows, I found out my surrogate father had a massive stroke. This unfortunate event propelled me to realize that family was the most important thing that we have after God. God also reminded me that I needed to finally focus on recording music. I didn’t know at the time that this was going to come to pass a year later under the guise of my team.
WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE ANYONE HAS EVER GIVEN YOU?
Keep God first in all that you do.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE READING THIS YOUR INTERVIEW THAT MAY BE AFRAID TO PURSUE A DREAM THAT THEY HAVE?
WRITE YOUR VISION AND MAKE IT PLAIN so that when others who believe can CATCH YOUR VISION. LIVE YOUR DREAM- even if it seems like no one is watching. Make sure your dream is one that will improve the lives of others. You may accomplish your goals, but the price you pay to live a dream that takes away from and destroys other people will be one too great to pay.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR ANWAR? WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF 5 YEARS FROM NOW?
I will definitely have at least 3 more albums out. There are so many stories to be told and as I get older, I gain the courage to tell those stories without self-judgment or all those other fears we allow to paralyze us in our walk of life. I also want to have a Grammy award and a(nother) role in a feature film or dramedy such as “The Game” now on BET. Lastly, I want to have started to build my school in or near Newark, NJ. Below you will find the scriptures our church was given to meditate on during this first day of fasting. Even if you aren’t participating in the fast, it’s always good to read scripture! I pray God opens your ears so you may hear exactly what He wants you to know and I pray He opens your eyes to see and understand his Word! Amen!
Revelation 3:15-20 (New International Version, ©2010)
15 I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! 16 So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth. 17 You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. 18 I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.
19 Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent. 20 Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.
Jeremiah 29:11-14 (New International Version, ©2010)
11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 12 Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. 14 I will be found by you,” declares the LORD, “and will bring you back from captivity.[a] I will gather you from all the nations and places where I have banished you,” declares the LORD, “and will bring you back to the place from which I carried you into exile.”
Ephesians 1:15-23 (New International Version, ©2010)
Thanksgiving and Prayer
15 For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all God’s people, 16 I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. 17 I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit[a] of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. 18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, 19 and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength 20 he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, 21 far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. 22 And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.
Philippians 3:3-11 (New Living Translation)
3 For we who worship by the Spirit of God[a] are the ones who are truly circumcised. We rely on what Christ Jesus has done for us. We put no confidence in human effort, 4 though I could have confidence in my own effort if anyone could. Indeed, if others have reason for confidence in their own efforts, I have even more!
5 I was circumcised when I was eight days old. I am a pure-blooded citizen of Israel and a member of the tribe of Benjamin—a real Hebrew if there ever was one! I was a member of the Pharisees, who demand the strictest obedience to the Jewish law. 6 I was so zealous that I harshly persecuted the church. And as for righteousness, I obeyed the law without fault. 7 I once thought these things were valuable, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done. 8 Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ 9 and become one with him. I no longer count on my own righteousness through obeying the law; rather, I become righteous through faith in Christ.[b] For God’s way of making us right with himself depends on faith. 10 I want to know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised him from the dead. I want to suffer with him, sharing in his death, 11 so that one way or another I will experience the resurrection from the dead!
- Philippians 3:3 Some manuscripts read worship God in spirit; one early manuscript reads worship in spirit.
- Philippians 3:9 Or through the faithfulness of Christ
**Here’s another version of the above scripture**
Philippians 3:3-11 (The Message)
2-6Steer clear of the barking dogs, those religious busybodies, all bark and no bite. All they’re interested in is appearances—knife-happy circumcisers, I call them. The real believers are the ones the Spirit of God leads to work away at this ministry, filling the air with Christ’s praise as we do it. We couldn’t carry this off by our own efforts, and we know it—even though we can list what many might think are impressive credentials. You know my pedigree: a legitimate birth, circumcised on the eighth day; an Israelite from the elite tribe of Benjamin; a strict and devout adherent to God’s law; a fiery defender of the purity of my religion, even to the point of persecuting the church; a meticulous observer of everything set down in God’s law Book. 7-9The very credentials these people are waving around as something special, I’m tearing up and throwing out with the trash—along with everything else I used to take credit for. And why? Because of Christ. Yes, all the things I once thought were so important are gone from my life. Compared to the high privilege of knowing Christ Jesus as my Master, firsthand, everything I once thought I had going for me is insignificant—dog dung. I’ve dumped it all in the trash so that I could embrace Christ and be embraced by him. I didn’t want some petty, inferior brand of righteousness that comes from keeping a list of rules when I could get the robust kind that comes from trusting Christ—God’s righteousness. 10-11I gave up all that inferior stuff so I could know Christ personally, experience his resurrection power, be a partner in his suffering, and go all the way with him to death itself. If there was any way to get in on the resurrection from the dead, I wanted to do it.
