I came across this show called Unfaithful : Stories of Betrayal  on OWN and was in shock at the transparency and honesty each couple displayed during each episode. Check out a clip below:

Watching this show I was amazed to see that many of the couples share the same exact issues. So with the numerous amount of friends and family that I have getting ready to tie the knot this and next year, I wanted to share with you 5 ways to know you are headed for divorce. Did you know that 50% of couples that walk down the aisle will get a divorce? 50%!! That number is WAY too high!! If marriage is supposed to be a ministry, I ask you, how are you setting an example for your friends and family who are looking to you to know what marriage is all about? If you are married, is how you and your husband are in public, how you behave at home? This (long ;)) post is to help you understand what things NOT to do in your marriage so that you do not become a statistic for divorce, but a statistic among successful marriages!

  1. YOUR SPOUSE IS NOT YOUR BEST FRIEND. This sounds simple enough. Every great marriage has a strong friendship as the foundation ; but this means so much more than just someone you share a laugh or two with occasionally. A lot of times we enter into our marriages already having 1 or 2 best friend(s) or even our parents are our BFF’s, but your friendship with your spouse MUST take precedent over any other human friendship. (I say human because God should be your 1st BFF ;)). In this case, you have to begin training yourself, friends and family members to understand who your new BFF is. Start sharing things with your spouse that you do not share with others. This helps to build a bond and intimacy among the both you, which also helps to create a trust worthy environment. If you are comfortable sharing everything with your spouse, you’ll be able to practice open and honest communication at all times. This comes with spending true, quality time with one another and constantly “dating”. Contrary to what anyone tells you, you NEVER stop dating and pursuing your spouse. Treat everyday like it is the first time you two have met. Now, I am not saying go into complete isolation and revolve your world around this one person LOL! But, you must understand the enemy does NOT like marriage, he will attack your union anyway that he can. You and your spouse are going to be the only two on the front lines of battle, the last mentality you want is “every man for himself” you too are in this together and need to treat your lives as such. {Genesis 2:24 – “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.” }
  2. YOUR CHILDREN OR PETS HAVE SEEN YOU NAKED MORE THAN YOUR SPOUSE. Oh, yes I did LOL! How many times have you undressed or changed in front of your kids or the goldfish in your room?! Do you know that lack of intimacy among married couples is included in the top 5 reasons couples get a divorce? Intimacy does not always include sexual intimacy; it could be holding hands, hugging, kissing , spending quality time together etc.  Many of us respond to touch, feeling desired and wanted. We need to feel the touch of another human, especially our spouse. Think about it. We want a pat on the back for a job well done, a hug from a long lost family member, imagine going a long length of time without a touch from your spouse. This easily affects self-esteem and can cause division. Generally, couples who are involved in sexless marriages are not happy in their relationship, they have unmet needs. In a report, it was found that happy couples have more sex, and the more sex a couple has, the happier they report being.  During a 1993 study, it was found that people in sexless marriages were more likely to have considered divorce than those in sexually active marriages. When there is an unmet need, the enemy is cunning in using that as a way to cause division in the union. There is also a higher chance adultery will occur and you NEVER want your spouse to seek outside of your marriage to fill an unmet need. Keep the lines of communication open at all times and be honest with your spouse about what you need. {1 Corinthians 7:3-5 3 The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband. 4 The wife does not have authority over her own body but yields it to her husband. In the same way, the husband does not have authority over his own body but yields it to his wife. 5 Do not deprive each other except perhaps by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.}
  3. YOU HIDE “PURCHASES” IN THE TRUNK OR THE CLOSET. Now if you are a serial “hider of purchases” you not only have a problem being honest with your spouse, but you also have issues being honest with yourself. Unless you purchased a gift as a surprise and needed to hide it, there is no reason to hide anything from your spouse. If you do not share your spending habits, you might be tempted to hide and shield other information from your spouse.  This is a habit you do not want to pick  up. Once again, being open and honest with your mate will prevent problems in the future. You NEVER want your spouse to discover something you have been hiding; be open to share at all times. “Purchases” can be anything from bags from bloomies to shielding who you  feel really are. Never hide behind who you think your spouse or anyone wants you to be or who you think your spouse wants. BE YOU! It will set you and your marriage free. {Proverbs 11:3 – The integrity of the honest keeps them on track;
       the deviousness of crooks brings them to ruin.}
  4. YOUR FACEBOOK “FRIENDS” & TWITTER PEEPS LIKE YOU MORE THAN YOUR SPOUSE LIKES YOU. In a society where a lot of our time is spent on the internet and social networking it has become a full-time job to manage your social accounts! It is a world where we control how we are portrayed, we can say what we want, when we want it with hardly any repercussion. But when all of your energy is put into constantly communicating with people over the internet and portraying a life that you desire to have, you begin to form emotional connections and responsibilities to people and things that are not more important than channeling that same energy into your household. If you cannot go a full hour without checking your FB account, tweeting something, posting to Tumblr, recording a YouTube video, then I will pose to you that you may have a problem. Granted, I understand many people make a living off of social networking, there are many bloggers, Vloggers, and even businesses that are doing it big off of social networking,  but when it starts to follow you to the dinner table, or your in bed with your spouse updating your FB status or your quality time includes checking to see how many new followers you have, it’s becoming too much. There should always be a healthy balance of attention given to your spouse in your household. You must make time to ensure the same way you are building relationships across the net is the same way you are building up your marriage.  Bottom line, when it’s all said and done there will be one person standing by your side and you want them to know that they are valued and appreciated no matter what! Purposefully neglect an activity you would normally do so you can spend quality time with your spouse. {Enjoy life with the wife /husband you love all the days of your fleeting life. ~ Ecclesiastes 9:9}
  5. YOU DON’T FORGIVE. This is plain and simple. Whenever we enter into a relationship, especially a marriage we have a habit of entering with  TON of expectations, some of them set VERY high. With extremely high expectations comes the possibility of disappointment, frustration and resentment. YOU MUST LEARN TO FORGIVE in a marriage. Your spouse is going to do something every single day that will hurt  you, disappoint you and may even shock and offend you, I guarantee it! But you MUST learn to forgive. Forgiveness is you allowing a wall to come down and for love, peace and communication to flow through. Forgiveness is essential to the growing of your marriage. Marriage is not easy and it will not always be a walk in the park. But it is the most rewarding experiences you will ever have as long as you are willing to work for it. The key word here…WORK! {Whoever would foster love covers over an offense, but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends. Proverbs 17:9}

Today is April 22, 2012 and that means it’s Earth Day!! What fun things are you doing today and everyday to ensure you are going green? Not sure where to start? Here are some fun facts to help you start living a greener lifestyle today!

  1. Stop using disposable bag and start using reusable bags. I have SO many of these!! Prices range from FREE – $0.99. This is an awesome way to grocery shop and they are awesome to carry with you on a busy Saturday while running errands.
  2. Turn off the lights whenever you leave a room.
  3. Turn your computer completely off at night. When you set your computer to “sleep” at night instead of turning it completely off, you are still using energy. You could save up to 300 watts by making this simple change.
  4. Start paying your bills online as well and start opting to receive you statements online.
  5. Unplug chargers and appliances when they are not in use.
  6. Collect rainwater and use that to water your houseplants and/or garden.
  7. Use a cloth instead of paper to clean your kitchen. Be creative! Use an old t-shirt or towel instead of a paper towel or sponge.
  8. Turn the water off while brushing your teeth. Doing this act along will save you 4 gallons of water.
  9. Shorten your showers. Every minute you cut from your shower is roughly 5 gallons of water!
  10. Plant a tree.
What things are you doing to go green? Share your tips and tricks below!
I hope you all are enjoying your Sunday! Have an incredible week!

Have you ever had someone say something to you that you weren’t sure was a compliment or insult? It was something that made you laugh, but think twice about what was said about you. Well, about a month ago I received a message on Facebook just like this so after much thought, I decided to write about it ;).

In the message, a friend of mine wrote:

 I saw a girl in the mall that reminded me of you she had that same expression you always used to have LOL!  Hard to explain the look but its like “I have no idea where im going but I know exactly how to get there” LOL – confused but focused.

Now…after reading this initially I couldn’t decide if this was an insult or a compliment LOL! But the strange thing about it was I understood exactly what my friend was saying about me. So now I confess to you : I am TOTALLY confused about what God has called me to do and be, but focused and hopeful that I will know it and fulfill it. Being confused about your calling is thee most frustrating thing EVER! I am among many who are searching for their calling in life.  How many of us walk a path knowing nothing about where we are going, but we know what it takes to get there, or we’re confused about what we are supposed to be doing but focused on getting into a better situation than what we are in now. Whether in the area of relationships, or jobs, our family and home life – we are subjected to being confused and unsure about a lot of situations we are in or decisions we have made.

Now, I want those of you who are confused but focused about any area in your life to know one thing : IT’S OKAY! There is nothing wrong with you! You’re not crazy, you’re not slow, you are not a loser, you are not being punished – stop beating yourself up.

I am speaking to you from experience today. I know what it feels like to be confused but focused, feeling lost in the sauce and unsure.  I am learning to embrace my confusion because it leaves me vulnerable to fully trusting God, I have no choice but to be focused on Him. Here are a few scriptures for you to keep on your heart:

  • So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and immovable. Always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless. {1 Corinthians 15:58} – I love this scripture because it reminds you that we are all called to serve others. When you serve others you are putting your cares and worries on the back burner and focused on giving to someone else. When we are too focused on ourselves we leave the window open to start feeling bad about ourselves and that is the last thing we need!
  • Everything has already been decided. It was known long ago what each person would be. So there’s no use arguing with God about your destiny. {Ecclesiastes 6:10} – This doesn’t need ANY explanation!
  • Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. {Philippians 4:6} – Express to God what your feeling, He wants to hear from you. Tell Him what you need and what you’re searching for but never forget to be grateful for where you are right now. After all, you may not be where you want to be, but you are nowhere near what you used to be.

I may not know a ton of things, but one thing I am sure about is God makes no mistakes. Everyone is here for a reason with a purpose, and that includes you and me! If you haven’t already, start a gratitude journal. Oprah is known to have one of these and I will admit it has been an awesome tool to get my eyes off the negative and focus on the positive. All you need is a notebook, pen and 5 things you were grateful for during the day. It’s also SUPER important for you NOT to compare your progress with others’. If your around people who put you down or who are not supportive during your journey GET RID OF THEM! Start getting around people who you admire and are doing something you would love to do. They will be your greatest teachers as well as a healthy support system.

Start small, get exposed to new things and adventures, be grateful for your today and expect the great!

Take a look at these chic and sporty jackets that will jazz up any look you are going for!

This statement made by our President today, like this unspeakable tragedy hits home for all of us. By now many of us around the country and the world are appalled at the news of this story and the lack of action that has been taken in Florida. If you do not know Trayvon’s story you can click here.

Join me in supporting JP Designs Art as they memorialize Trayvon’s life. Let us all get the word out that Trayvon represents so many of us, our children and those to come. As a country, whether you are black, white, yellow, orange or green, we should not stand by and allow Zimmerman to walk the streets without justice being served. It is time for us to stand together and demand action be taken. It could have very easily been your son or grandson or brother or nephew or cousin walking home from the store that evening.

If you have not signed the petition to see Zimmerman arrested  for the murder of 17-year old Trayvon, please click the link here —>SEE JUSTICE FOR TRAYVON!

To purchase your Trayvon memorial apparel, please visit today. The design is available  in an array of colors and sizes in Men’s and Women’s tees and of course Hoodies.

Like my lil’ Jersey twist on that don’t you?! 😉

We all remember hearing that saying at some point in our lives; in fact, many of us still use the phrase…”Robbing Peter to Pay Paul”. It suggest that your were taking away from one person or thing and giving to another. This phrase did not always refer to money and finances, it also referred to time, your commitments and dedication versus one area of your life to another. “Peter and Paul” is something we ALL have, it varies among us. If you spend more time in the office, you are lacking at home. If you spend more time with one child, you are neglecting the other. If you choose to pay one bill, the other bill will fall behind. I you choose to spend more time with one group of friends, you neglect another.

I want to talk about Peter. Just think about it. We are always given warnings, we have conversations, we devise plans on how to ensure Peter becomes a priority; but it never occurs. We lock ourselves in the habit of robbing one to pay another. No one ever worries about “Peter” until its too late. When the bill collector begins calling, were reminded of “Peter”, when one of our children becomes rebellious, were reminded they were a “Peter”. When our homes are falling apart and are no longer homes, but houses, we are reminded of “Peter”. “Peter” serves as a reminder of what we can’t do. He is a reminder of where we lack, areas where we don’t feel successful or where we feel like “all is lost”. It could be the bill that’s just way to high, the child who has been arrested way too many times, the husband or wife who sees no purpose at home or the parents who can’t see anything positive in their child. In turn, we throw ourselves into “Paul” – the bill that is almost paid off, the child who is an honor student, the job where we receive recognition versus criticism, the young lady or man that gives wanted attention. We take what little we have invested in our “Peters” and give it all to our  “Pauls”.

As humans, we are always going to feel our lives pulled in multiple directions. Let’s face it, we all wear different “faces”. We are moms, dads, daughters, sons, co-workers, wives, husbands, business owners, neighbors, etc. But, life is all about balance. You cannot live a healthy, effective life without it. Prioritizing where we choose to devote and commit our time and money should be seen as investment deposits into our future, not as a burdening task.

One fact will still remain…Peter needs to be paid. Whether you decide to do it now or later, nothing comes without a price. The question you must ask yourself is: Whatever your robbing Peter of is it worth the cost of Paul?

Love Ya!

Happy Sunday friends! I came across a devotional that I enjoyed reading and I thought I would share with you!

“When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, ‘Simon son of John, do you truly love me more than these?’ ‘Yes, Lord,’ he said, ‘you know that I love you.’ Jesus said, ‘Feed my lambs’” John 21:15

Not long after I married my wife, Martie, I realized that she had a deep love for animals in general and dogs in particular. She grew up with Trudy, a black lab, who was a faithful friend and companion. I grew up in a home that never had any pets. (Actually, my mom had a canary, but it’s not easy to bond to a bird!) I’m sorry to admit this to all you dog lovers, but my feeling was, “Dogs? Who needs a dog? They’re for people who can’t make it with humans and need props from the animal kingdom.”

So, when Martie said, “Joe, let’s get a dog!” my answer to her was less than satisfactory. It was at that point that I woke up to a very important principle of loving relationships. It is this: You demonstrate your love to someone by caring about what they care about. Which meant that if I wanted to prove my love for Martie, I would set aside my rather warped view of pets. So that’s exactly what I did, and we bought a dog. And I helped walk the dog and feed the dog, and eventually I ended up liking the dog!

This is exactly what’s behind Jesus’ interrogation of Peter. Loving Jesus is not proven by our singing about our love for Him in church. It is most clearly demonstrated when we care about what He cares about. And, more than anything else, He cares about people. Reading through the Gospels, it becomes clear that He is “into” one thing—people. He came to our planet because people needed what He only could bring to us. And, as you probably know, He went to the extremes of self-sacrifice to prove how committed He was to meeting our needs.

What I find interesting is that His love for people was not reserved only for the people who were easy to love. He cared about the needs of tax collectors. He extended His love to despised Samaritans. He ate and fellowshiped with sinners and granted the freeing power of mercy and forgiveness to prostitutes. It didn’t make any difference—if you were warm and breathing, you mattered to Jesus.

In John 21, Peter had bailed on his calling to “fish for men” and had gone back to his old career of fishing for fish (John 21:3). After he and some others had fished all night and caught nothing, Jesus showed up on the beach and filled their nets with fish. It was at this point that He did some serious business with Peter. In a triple interrogation, Jesus wanted to know if Peter loved Him. Though Peter verbally affirmed his love, Jesus made it clear that He would know that Peter loved Him only when Peter left his nets again and gave himself to the needs and nurture of people.

So here’s the takeaway. It really doesn’t make any difference how fervently you and I verbally affirm our love for Jesus. If we aren’t into extending our love and resources to the needs of others, then He doesn’t feel loved by us. It’s just that simple! But here’s the good news. People are everywhere—all kinds of them! You can find them at home, in the office, on the streets, and in heavy traffic. There may even be a few at church! So what are you waiting for? Today, Jesus has shown up on the beach of your heart and called you from a life lost in your own interests and offered you the privilege of getting involved in what He cares about—the needs and nurture of people!

  • Read the conversation between Jesus and Peter in John 21:15-17. How would you respond to Jesus’ question?
  • What is more important to you than the needs of others? Is it your plans, your possessions, your time, your energy? What could you intentionally do today to show your love for Jesus by reaching out to the needs of others? Make a specific plan. Just to stay in shape, do one thing each day to let Jesus know that you love Him!
  • If Jesus were to approach your heart’s door, would He see a sign swinging from the door handle that reads: “Gone Fishin’”?
